Fixing the Canon AE-1 Program Squeal

Fixing the Canon AE-1 Program Squeal

A well known problem with the Canon AE-1 Program is that the camera makes a loud squealing sound when the shutter is released. This is actually caused by a part in the mirror mechanism needing relubricated.

There are many tutorials for fixing this online and virtually all of them are wrong. You cannot just drip some oil into the camera, and you should NEVER use something like WD-40 on a camera.

This tutorial by Gene Pate shows you the PROPER way to fix the Canon Squeal by disassembling the camera and properly lubricating the affected mechanism.

We also have service guides for the AE-1 Program from the National Camera Repair School and the Society of Photo-Technologists in the Related Items below.

We also have a tutorial for fixing the Canon Mirror Squeak problem written by Gene Pate.

For the first five years that we operated this site, we were able to offer all of these manuals as free downloads. The site has gotten so large and popular that we are exceeding the limits of bandwidth and storage imposed by our web host. Please don't share these files; if we do not bring in enough revenue to pay to keep the site online, we will be forced to shut the site down. We've set the price low eough that it won't burden those who want to learn to repair cameras, while hopefully bringing in enough each month to keep the site open. We are not trying to make a profit from this.
